  • Question: Do I have to be in super shape before I can take a climbing course?
    Answer:
    No. Average physical condition is all the fitness required, most first time climbers are not marathon runners.
  • Question: What kind of equipment will I need or will it be provided?
    Answer:
    The Rock Course is the only course that you will need equipment for all other courses will have gear provided by us. (Rock Course requires climbing shoes.)
  • Question: How long are the courses? Do I have to camp out?
    Answer:
    All courses are from 9:00-3:00. If you are taking a weekend course the refuge has camping at Camp Doris located on the refuge.

  • Question: Can I take a two-day Rock Course or can I combine courses?
    Answer:
    Yes. We are very flexiblle. If you want to climb for two days, you can take the Rock Course for the weekend or you can take an Anchor Course and Rock Course over the weekend.
  • Question: I have climbed alot in the rock gym but never outdoors, what can I expect?
    Answer:
    Some of the things that you learned from the gym are the same when climbing outdoors such as tying-in and belaying. The first thing you will learn from us is footwork, most gym climbers have the tendancy to climb using only there arms and not paying attention the their feet.
  • Question: I have been climbing for a few years and want to start climbing
    harder routes, do you have any courses for me?
    Answer:
    Yes. The rock course is tailored to each persons indiduals ability, if you have a specific skill that you want to work on or just get on some more difficult climbs we can do this.
  • Question: What kind of clothes should I wear for the climbing day?
    Answer:
    Dress for the weather, loose fitting clothing is best, shorts are good
    for the summer, long pants for cooler temperatures. Comfortable hiking shoes or tennis shoes are good for the hike to the climbs.
  • Question: How far do we have to hike?
    Answer:
    Most of the climbs are less than a thirty-minute hike on well marked trails.
  • Question: What do I need to bring with me for food?
    Answer:
    Bring a sack lunch and plenty of water, do not bring a bunch of soft
    drinks instead of water. Bring a small daypack to carry your lunch which is also nice for carrying a camera and your personal things. (DO NOT BRING A GYM BAG.) Gym bags are much more difficult to manage on the hike in

  • Question: Do you give special rates for large groups?
    Answer: Due to environmental and impact concerns large groups are discouraged and it may infringe on someone else’s outdoor experience.
  • Question: Do you have courses year round?
    Answer:
    Yes. Oklahoma temperatures allow for climbing year round.
